Charleston Coin Silver Presentation Goblet/Chalice. ca. 1852. Height: 5 1/2”. Mark: J. EWAN in serrated cartouche.

Maker: John Ewan (b.1786-d.1852) Active 1823-1852, from 1825 he worked at 127 King Street until his death in 1852.

Presentation: “Presented by the Officers of the German Fusiliers to The Best Shot, May 1853.”

A rare mid 19th century footed cup with floral and scroll decoration, Cartouche inscribed: “Presented by the Officers of the German Fusiliers to The Best Shot, May 1853”. This rare piece of Charleston presentation coin silver was likely purchased from Ewan in 1852 or after his death from his estate in1853.

The German Fusiliers were formed in 1775 by Charleston’s Germans, they distinguished themselves at the Battle of Savannah during the American Revolution. Charleston had a strong German community, they founded St. John’s Lutheran Church in 1759 and the German Friendly Society in 1766. Charleston Germans had their own section of town called Dutchtown, by the 1850’s Charleston’s German-American’s were very prosperous with may grocery and retail stores in the city as well as its own newspaper, firefighting companies as well as six military companies. Very rare Tennessee Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity 14 Karat Gold twisted handle spoon. Length :4”. weight 7.4 grams. ca. 1850’s. Marked: “HOPE”, next to a Masonic symbol.

David Hope was born in 1799 at Ramsey Plantation near Knoxville. Hope apprenticed in Huntsville, Alabama and returned to Knoxville by 1828 where he became a Master Mason at Mt. Libanus Lodge. When Samuel Bell moved to Texas in 1852, David Hope purchased the contents of his silversmithing shop. Hope remained in the silversmithing and jewelry business until 1869.

A match safe / snuff or pill box. This silver plate box is a souvenir from the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, informally known as the St. Louis World's Fair, which was held in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1904. The lid has a portrait of Thomas Jefferson and is marked "Thomas Jefferson, Father of the Louisiana Purchase". It is made of brass with a nickel plate finish and measures 2 1/2" x 1 3/4" x 3/8".

Tobacco Presentation Ewer. ca. 1858

American Coin Silver with mark for William Adams (New York, 1803-1861)

Height: 9 3/4”. Weight 16 Troy Ounces.

Extraordinary ewer with hand repousse and chased tobacco farm scenes including tobacco plants a house and two tobacco farmers/merchants standing next to two tobacco hogshead barrels.

Inscribed: “Lucy G. Adams, A token from her Grandpapa T. A. B. “

William Adams was a very important New York Maker who is best know as the creator of the ceremonial mace for the United States House of Representatives in 1842. Adams was a friend of Henry Clay and received numerous commissions from Clay. Adams also sold silver to silversmiths and retailers in Kentucky.

This ewer relates to another William Adams Tobacco Pitcher/ewer that was presented by the Kentucky State Agricultural Society and Spratt Bourne & Co. at their Tobacco Exhibit May 25th, 1859. This ewer sold at Cowans Auction for $41,125 (including buyers Premium) on February 25th, 2012, Lot number 316, property of Caswell and Sara Lane. This may have been a direct commission from Adams or purchased from a silversmith/retailer in Kentucky.

It is also relates to a pitcher and pair of goblets sold by us, either made or retailed by John Kitts of Louisville. The inscriptions reads: “Presented by the Ky. State Agr. Society and Spratt Harper & co. to Wm. Wells of Hart Co. Ky as a premium for the Hogshead of best Manufacturing leaf tobacco exhibited at the Pickett Warehouse Louisville May 19th 1858.” ( Pictured on page 63 of Collecting Kentucky 1790-1860. This cup is marked as coin silver (900/1000) and also sterling,  the sterling mark was added later. 

Prontaut appears to be an unpublished georgia retailer and does not appear in The Silversmiths of Georgia by George Cutten or Kovels’ American Silver Marks.

In the dictionary for the city of Augusta, and businesses advertiser for 1859, Prontaut is listedas a jeweler and watchmaker located at 163 Broad Street in Augusta, Georgia.

Antoine Prontaut was born in Paris in 1810, he had twochildren, John Henry, born in New York City in 1842 and daughter Emma Bignon born around 1859 in Georgia. Antoine Prontaut is buried with his wife in Magnolia Cemetery in Augusta.

Asa Blanchard is know to have made silver in Lexington, Kentucky as early as 1808, he was very successful and advertised in the Lexington papers. He is listed in the 1820 Census as having two manufacturers that were male slaves and two female slaves. His shop was listed in the Lexington directory of 1838 as 18 North Mill Street, the corner of short, and his home was at 41 N. Mill.

Elijah M. Ringo worked in Fayetteville, Lincoln county Tennnessee. He was born in Kentucky around 1798, and by 1824 he was working in Fayetteville where he operated a clock and watchmakers shop, south side of the square. Ringo served as a trustee of Lincoln county in 1836 and 1844. According to the census for manufacturers for Lincoln County in 1850 he had invested $700 in his one man business; he used two tons of wood and four bushels of coal in fashioning and annual production valued at $ 600.

A rare early example of this rare maker.

John S. Britton is listed in Tennessee Silversmiths by Benjamin Caldwell Jr. on page 42. His shop was located on Vine street where he worked between 1855 and 1857. He died in April of 1860 and is buried in the old City Cemetery. There is an almost identical cup pictured in Caldwells book, it was Awarded by the West Tennessee Division Fair .

A large fiddle coin silver spoon by Prussian born silversmith John A. Miller. Miller advertised in Hodgmans’ guide for 1870-71 as a watchmaker and jeweler, 32 Broadway, Paducah. Western Kentucky silver is relatively scarce, it is also rare to be city marked. 

Condition: Good, some dark specks in bowl that would come out with polishing. Expected wear and minor scratches associated with use.

George Macpherson was working in Natchez as early as 1843, achristening cup bearing Macphersons mark and the inscription“ Presented to Peyton LeRoy Johnson by his Grand Father on the day of his birth Feb. 26th 1843” proves that he was working in Natchez as early as 1843. Macpherson was trained as a silversmith in Glasgow, Scotland before emigrating to the United States and settling in Natchez. 

Octagonal Handled/ Christening cup with repousse decoration and applied handle. 

Condition: Good overall, handle has bee re-soldered to cup, dent to handle.

A classic ca. 1825 form with what looks like an unpublished partnership, a rare spoon. L. Warrington Sloat worked in Mobile from 1819 until 1839 on Dauphin Street, at which time he sold his inventory and business to the L’Hommedieu brothers in April 1839. (Ref. Made in Alabama A State Legacy page 308.) At some point Smith and Sloat were in partnership, it is not know when this partnership took place and how long it lasted. There was a Smith listed in Mobile, Silversmiths and Jewelers 1820-1867 by Sidney Adair Smith, he is listed as a jeweler in 1850 so were are not sure if it is the same Smith as the Smith and Sloat partnership.

Robert Rait is listed in Kovels as a silversmith working in New York city between 1830 and 1855.

Eli C. Garner andDaniel Frank Winchesterbecame partners in the firm or Garner and Winchester around 1843, Garner was born in Virginia in 1817 and came to Lexington where he apprenticed under Asa Blanchard. Winchester apprenticed in Baltimore, this explains the use ofthe purity standard marks commonly used on Baltimore silver. 10 oz 15 refers to 10oz of silver per 15 ounces Troy or about 89.6% silver.

reeded bands on rim and base.

A good set of large Tennessee coin silver spoons with great local history and provenance.

Wonderfullyheavy and well made silver beaker. This beaker was raise(hand hammered) from a single piece of silver.  Simon Chaudron was in businessfrom 1807 till 1812, when he partnered with Anthony Rasch. Early Chaudron marked pieces are rare. Beautiful engraved period monogram.

Simon Chaudron was a French man who came to Philadelphia after a slave uprising in Santo Domingo in 1790. He made silver, jewelry, wrote poetry and published a newspaper for Frenchmen. Chaudron was a very successful and influential man in Philadelphia, among his friends were Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. Chaudron is best known in Alabama for organizing the Vine and Olive Colony in 1819, near Demopolis in Marego county Alabama. He purchased a large track of land from the United States Government with the intent of starting a colony comprised mostly ofFrenchmen who were former officials under Napoleon. The colony was not successful and Chaudron ended up moving to Mobile about 9 years later where he advertised as a watchmaker. 

Condition: Excellent with no repairs and excellent patina.

A heavy salver with beaded edge and engraved center, resting on scrolled acanthus leaffeet. Incise mark Mitchell and Tyler. 

Salvers are flat or footed trays used for carrying or serving glasses or dishes at a table, or for presenting a letter or card by a servant. In Royal households the fear of poisoning led to the custom or tasting the food or drink before it was served to the master and his guest; this custom iscalled Salva in Spanish and Salvare in Latin, doubtless this is the origin of the English word Salver. 

Condition: Excellent.

American Coin Silver Pap Boat 

ca. 1809--1812

Makers: Simon Chaudron and Anthony Rasch. 

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

A rare and interesting American coin silver pap boat made by the famous Philadelphia firm of Chaudron and Rasch. This helmet form pap boat has a simple rolled edge rim and beautifully monogramed letter “R”.

Pap boats were used beginning in the mid 18th century to feed children “pap”, a food made for infants usually made of bread, flour and water. The form is an adaptation of the sauce boat. 

Interestingly the die seems to have lost the letter A in Rasch. 

Condition: Excellent, small dent in side. 

Anthony Rasch, is thought to have arrived in Philadelphia around 1806. In 1809 Raschformed a partnershipwithSimon Chaudron that lasted until 1812.  From 1812 to 1819 Rasch worked by himself and briefly partnered with George Willig Jr.

The 1819 run on banks finally did Rasche’s flounderingbusiness in and he filed for bankruptcy. By 1820 Rasch has moved to New Orleans and was advertising his new silversmithing business.  His early New Orleans silver is indistinguishable from his latePhiladelphia pieces.

John Kitts was a Louisville, Kentucky silversmith.

Chaddick is listed in Mobile Silversmiths and Jewelers 1820-1867 by Sidney Adair Smith as a watchmaker and jeweler 1850-1859.

Mark: P.Negrin in serrated edge cartouche, flanked by eagles in an oval cartouche.

Weight: 4.8 troy ounces. 

A very rare and early Tennessee coin silver cup made byNashville silversmith Paul Negrin. Negrinwas born in France in 1798, he apprentice to a silversmith and jeweler in Baltimore in 1816 and by1820 moved to Charlottesville, Virginia where heopened his own silversmith and jewelry shop.  While Negrin was in Charlottesville he did work for Thomas Jefferson and acted as a translator for Thomas Jeffereson’s Italian stone cutter Giacomo Riggi. By 1823 he moved to Nashville where he advertised as a watchmaker and jeweler. 

Round pear shaped body with leaf and dot decorated raised foot, cross hatch with center dotbanding on flared rim.

Condition: Good, no repairs, polished. Cups from this period sometimeshave handles but this cup does not show evidence ofhaving had a handle.

William P. McKay and Co.

ca. 1840-50.

Possibly Sumpter county or Huntsville Alabama. 

William McKay came to Huntsville Alabama in 1817 or 1818, he remained in 

Huntsville until 1837. By 1848 he is listed as being in Sumpter county, and by

1859-60 he was listed in the Huntsville city directory as operating a large school with his wife Sarah. There appears to be uncertainty about this mark as there is a William P. McKay listed in a Boston directory of the period. The Alabama Silversmith book by James Cormay as well as the Made in Alabama a State legacy, the Birmingham Museum of Art Exhibit, both claimMcKay and this mark as Alabama.

John Kitts was a very successful Louisville, Kentucky silversmith, it is noted in Silversmiths, Jewelers, Clock and Watch Makers of Kentucky 1785-1900 by Marquis Boutinghouse that the mark John Kitts & co was used between 1857 and 1864.

Provenance: Likely belonged to Bernard Coquet or a relative. 

Purchased from an estate in New Orleans in 1998.

Page 7. “ These coin silver teaspoons with the initials “ A.H.” and the struck mark “F” are in the late 18th early 19th century style and were probably made in New Orleans by a smith who is yet to be identified.”  

This fascinating heavy French style spoon could wellhave been made in a French Island colony such as Saint-Dominique, present day Haiti or more likely New Orleans by a refugee.   The spoon   istheFrench uniplat style, which is anupturned mid-rib fiddle pattern, with the name Coquet engraved on the reverse( this would have been preferred by a French clientele.) The reverse of the spoon is struck twice with the makers mark; capital letter “F” in a cartouche. This type of makers mark with a single letter is very unusual. New OrleansCreole silversmith Pierre Lamothe (ca. 1770-1823) made almost identical spoons of the same length. Pierre Lamothe was born in Haiti where he trained as a silversmith, he moved to New Orleans by 1809. It is estimated that13,000 refugees arrived inNew Orleans from Saint-Dominique between 1791 and 1803. 

There area set of 8 tablespoons by Pierre Lamothewhich were the same style and length with were dated on the reverse 1815.

Quadroon Balls in the Spanish Period by Ronald R. Morazan. Published in 1973 by the Louisiana Historical Association, page 310. writes about “Governor Carondelet granting Santiago Bernardo Coquet the privilege of giving weekly a pubic dance for the blacks.” soon after the public dancing hall was established in 1792.

The World That Made New Orleans: From Spanish Silver to Congo Square by Ned Sublette. References two businessmen Santiago Bernard Coquet and Jose Antonio Boniquet who in 1796 ran the city owned dance hall.

Writes about a man by the name ofBernard Coquet successfully petitioning the Spanish city government officials to grand him a license to hold public balls for free people of color in New Orleans in 1799. 

In the book Masterless Mistresses: the New Orleans Ursulines and the development of a new world society 1727-1834. Published in 2007 by UNC press, author Emily Clark mentions a Bernard Coquet who was the father of Filipine Coquet a student at the Ursuline school. Mr. Coquet was the co-owner of a ballroom where free people of color held their weekly dances in the late 18th century. 

The 1805 New Orleans City Directory lists a J. B. Coquet residing at 27 Rue St. Phillipe. 

The 1811 New Orleans City Directory lists a Bernard Coquet residing at 27 St. Philippe Street. 

The 1822 New Orleans City Directory lists Jacques Bernard Coquet as proprietor of the St. Philip theaterat 32 & 39 Philip Street. 

The St. Philip Street Theater was built in 1808 between Royal and Bourbon ata cost of $ 100,000. It was the second theater to be founded in New Orleans and had a seating capacity of 700 with a large parque with two tiers of boxes.

Louisville, Kentucky

Maker: Henry Hudson. (1816-1888)

Incised Mark: “H. Hudson, Louisville”

A good example of classic form. Plain tapered cylindrical form with applied 

reeded bands on rim and base. 

Henry Hudson (also know as Harry) appeared in the 1841 Louisville Directory as a jeweler by 1845 he was listed in the Directory as a silversmith.  In the 1850 census he is listed as having 6 male employees and one female one, it is not know whatrole the female employee had in the firm. Between 1855 and 1858 Henry Hudson was in partnership with Jacob Dolfinger. It is interesting to note that Henry served as Emminent Commander of the Knights Templar, Louisville No. 1, in 1855. An 1852 Louisville directory advertisement reads: 

“H.Hudson, West Side Fourth st. Between Main and Market. Manufacturer and Dealer in all kinds of Silver Ware, Masonic and Sons of Temperance Jewels, Knights Templar Regalia, & c., Wholesale and Retail. Constantly on Hand an Assortment of WATCHES JEWELRY, and Fancy GOODS. Watches and Jewelry repaired.”

Condition: Fine patina, appropriate wear for age, small dent to bottom. Superficial “crack” on underside. No monograms.

A good heavy serving spoon in a pointedfiddlethread pattern. Kovels lists the O.S. Jennings mark as being New Orleans. I am making the assumption due the provenance and other O.S. Jennings marked pieces that are knownin the same pointed fiddle and thread pattern. 

Provenance: Belonged to Cornelia Evans Brandon Cabral. (1900-1992). Mrs. Cabral was born in Wilkinson county Mississippi and lived in New Orleans for 80 years. She was a graduate of Sophie Newcomb College. Her father was Peter Charles Claude Cabral a native of New Orleans.

An extremely scarce ladle by Nashville’s first silversmith. It is believed that the J.T. was removed from Joseph Thorp Ellistons mark when his nephew John joined in partnership with him.  The dot Elifton mark is also found on a pair of sugar tongs believed to have been made for Andrew Jackson. 

Condition: Dents to bowl.

Silver by Coan is scarce, this is a nice set of 8 tea spoons with a 

three letter monogram which looks like “J E E”

Condition: Good, four spoons have bends in handles that could be professionally repaired.

Tapering cylindrical sides with applied plain and beaded banding to base and rim. 

John Kitts was a very successful Louisville, Kentucky silversmith, it is noted in Silversmiths, Jewelers, Clock and Watch Makers of Kentucky 1785-1900 by Marquis Boutinghouse.

ca.1835-41 Mobile, Alabama

Silver by Coan is rare, this is a beautiful pair of sugar tongs in exceptional condition with beautiful shell tongs.

Maker: Asa Blanchard ( working 1808-1838)

Cartouche mark: “A.BLANCHARD”

A beautiful ladle by one of Kentucky’s best know makers.

This ladle is struck with the earlier cartouche mark, “A.BLANCHARD”.

Asa Blanchard is know to have made silver in Lexington, Kentucky as early as 1808, he was very successful and advertised in the Lexington papers. He is listed in the 1820 Census as having two manufacturers that were male slaves and two female slaves. His shop was listed in the Lexington directory of 1838 as 18 North Mill Street, the corner of short, and his home was at 41 N. Mill. 

Good original condition with no repairs. The A and D in the punch mark are fading , showing the deterioration of the punch. Slight ding and burr at end of handle.

Paul Revere Silver Beaker
Boston. ca. 1790.
Mark: “REVERE” Kane mark B.
Maker: Paul Revere (1734-1818)

A hand raised tapered cylindrical beaker with slightly flaring lip
and caulked rim, engraved “W. N. Boylston”.

Paul Revere is one of the most famous figures in the American revolution. He is best know for his role as the midnight rider from Boston to Lexington to warn of the movements of the British army.

The “W.N. Boylston” engravingrefers to William Nicholas Boylston, benefactor of Harvard University, and after whom Boylston Street was named after.  
Below is a biography from the Princeton Historical Society:
Ward Nicholas Boylston, Esq., original name Ward Hallowell, was born in Boston, November 22nd, 1747. He was one of a family of fourteen children. His father, Benjamin Hallowell, Esq., was the commissioner of customs in the early history of Boston, and lived at the corner of Boylston and Center Streets, Jamaica Plain. He was a man of wealth and refinement, but as he was an officer of the Crown, he was, of course, a Loyalist. In March, 1776, he and his family with other Loyalists embarked for Halifax, and the following July sailed for England. His estate was confiscated in 1779, but was recovered by the heirs-at-law in 1801 by a suit in the United States District Court, a full account of which may be found in the New England Genealogical Register, Vol. XII, page 72, also in Drake's Roxbury, page 407, and Drake's Boston, page 686.

ca. 1780 - 1795

Sugar tongs, marked (pellet) REVERE in a rectangle inside the bow of the tongs.  Paul    Revere, probably 1780’s or 1790’s.   This is Buhler MFA mark b, which she says he used until about 1795.

The monogram is D at the bow in an elliptical reserve.  The monogram is for G A Captain Gilbert Dench and his wife Anna of Boston.

These tongs were listed for sale in a Christie’s auction catalogue for January 26, 1991, lot 57, but were withdrawn by the consignor before the sale.  They were purchased in 1991 by Gebelein Silversmiths of Vermont.  Christie’s research indicates that Revere’s surviving daybooks list two transactions with Captain Dench, one in 1782 and one in 1790 (vol.2, page69 and 89).  Neither is these tongs.  These tongs are listed in Kane’s Colonial Mass, Silversmiths on 

page 828; the listing was taken from the Christie’s auction catalogue.

Hayden Brothers and Company Charleston Fish Slice

An extraordinary fish slice with the city of Charleston engraved on the blade. The engraving shows the cityin the back ground and merchant/sailing ships in the foreground.  Slightly to the left of center we can see The Exchange and Provost Building (domed building with a flag). to the left of the Provostbuilding we can see St. Michael’s Church on Meeting street andto the right is theCircular Congregational Church, Meeting Street (burned in fire of 1861 and rebuilt in 1880s) on theright we can see St.  Philip’s on Church Street. It is quite likely that the print source for the engraving is an adaptation ofView of Charleston ca. 1771 by Thomas Leitch.

Provenance: Purchased from a Columbia South Carolina family with ties to Charleston.

Condition: Very good, “W.M.T” is the second 19th century monogram inthe banner cartouche.

 A desirable large size beaker with tapering slightly bulbous sides and reeded rim and base.  Stuck twice on underside in a serrated cartoucheJ.EWAN ”.

Condition: Good. No monogram. Associated dents and scratches expected with age. Old repair to rim.

ca. 1805-20

Mark: SAVAGE, with a lion and kings head pseudo marks. 

A well made,  heavy and early set of tongs, never monogrammed. 

William M. Savage was a silversmith working in Glasgow Kentucky. 

The first mention of Savage is in the Barren County, Kentucky marriage records when he married Susannah Williams on April 15th 1805. It is thought that he moved to Virginia for some time,  a William Savage advertises in the Staunton Eagle on April 2nd of 1808,  for “one or two journeymen clockmakers or silversmiths who would find constant employment at generous wages by applying to him at Liberty (now Bedford County Virginia.” Bedford county is between Roanoke and Lynchburg Virginia.

By 1813 he places an ad in the Kentucky Reporter along with fellow businessmen promoting settlement in Glasgow. The Savage mark with pseudo marks is pictured in Silversmiths, Jewelers, Clock and Watch Makers of Kentucky 1785-1900 by Marquis Boutinghouse.  It is interesting to note how newspaper advertisements were used in the early 19th century to promote the settlement of the “back county”.
